It may be cliche but bringing home Tequila from Mexico for yourself or as a gift is one of the best souvenir purchases you can make.
The question is, though, where to buy it?
If you are looking for a fancy bottle that can be part decoration, part drink I would highly recommend one of the stores along the Malecon if in Puerto Vallarta (bottle on the left). The Tequila is decent and the bottles really are quite stunning. You are paying a bit more, but if you are going to display it – it’s kind of a 2-for-1 deal.
If you are just looking for quality tequila, head to Costco, Sam’s club or, if you don’t have a membership card, Walmart. You can get the top brands for a fraction of what you would pay in Canada (But remember – the tax free limit is 1.14L for coming). My favourites are Herradura and Don Julio (anejo) (bottle on the right) but you can check it out for yourself.
Where not to buy it? The airport.
On my last trip I checked the duty free area and it turns out they were charging almost double for the bottles I got at Sam’s club. If you are in a rush this might be your go to, but I would highly recommend you pick it up before you head to the airport.
